Outline of Final Research Achievements

In a pilot study, we showed that tagatose at relatively higher concentration existed in saliva collected from adults with good oral hygiene. Here, we examined the probiotic effect of tagatose on oral microflora to maintain healthy conditions. Salivary metabolome analysis showed that a prediction model of periodontal inflammation severity could be constructed with several salivary metabolites including tagatose. In addition, our in vitro study showed that some oral bacteria were suppressed their growth and biofilm development under tagatose stress.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究における唾液メタボローム解析によっていくつかの物質が健康歯肉あるいは歯垢付着をみとめる歯肉をもつ唾液のプロファイルに各々特徴づけられることが明らかとなった。得られたデータセットを説明変数とし、歯周組織慢性炎症度を目的変数として回帰分析を行ったところ、これらの物質のいくつかは歯周組織に由来する慢性炎症の重症度と関連づけられ、歯周病由来の慢性炎症を評価できる可能性も示唆された。また、そのうちの一つであるタガトースには、いくつかの口腔細菌の増殖やバイオフィルム形成に抑制的な働きを示すことを検証し、健全な口腔細菌叢の維持に役立つプレバイオティクスとしての用途に用いる可能性が示された。
