Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究ではナノスケール変態強化を発現する新奇セラミックス物質の開発を目的に研究を行った。その結果、2つの大きな研究成果を得ることができた。一つ目は、破壊誘起アモルファス化による変態強化を発現する物質としてペロブスカイト型MgSiO3多結晶体を見出した。この物質はある意味非常にありふれた物質で、地球の深さ670km以深、地球の岩石部分の底(深さ2900km)までの最主要鉱物である。この地球の体積の約8割を占め地球そのものと言ってもいい物質を、一気圧下で構造用セラミックスとして使用すると変態強化、変態塑性を示し、とても割れにくいセラミックスであることを見出した。この成果はとても重要なので、現在も補足データを収集しており万全の状態で論文投稿する予定である。2つ目は、立方晶窒化ケイ素・透明多結晶体の合成に成功した。これは割れにくいセラミックスを創り出すつもりで取り組んだ研究だが、予期せず、全物質の中で3番目に硬く高い透明性を示す物質の合成に成功した。さらにこの物質は他の超硬質材料とは異なる特性も有しており、超硬質材料をこれまでとは違った用途で産業利用する可能性を開く物質になるかもしれない。発表した論文は世界中のメディアで取り上げられた。
