Outline of Final Research Achievements

We investigated isotopic/elemental compositions of noble gases and halogens in mantle-derived peridotite xenoliths and olivine phenocrysts in volcanic rocks by using neutron irradiation and ultrahigh-sensitive noble gas mass spectrometry, in order to better constrain how subducting plate brings volatiles, such as water, noble gases, and halogens into the mantle. Atmosphere/seawater-derived noble gases, sedimentary-pore-fluid-derived halogens, and oceanic-crust-derived halogens were identified in the mantle beneath subduction zones.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

日本に代表される沈み込み帯における活発な火山活動の源であるマグマは、直下のマントルに沈み込んだ海洋プレートから放出される、水をはじめとした揮発性成分がマントルの融点を下げたために生じることは分かっていたが、具体的にプレート中の何が水を運んでいるかは、天然試料の分析からは明らかになっていなかった。本研究は希ガスとハロゲンを手がかりに、沈み込むプレート中に形成した蛇紋石や、深海底堆積物と海洋地殻中の含水鉱物が水の運び手であることを明らかにし、また火山活動に伴い希ガスが水とともに地表へと戻っている一方で、ハロゲンの一部は水を失ったプレートとともに、より深部のマントルに沈み込んでいる可能性を示した。
