Outline of Final Research Achievements

Afterslip propagation process of megathrust earthquake is one of major factors about aftershocks. To investigate it as this international collaboration research, we did (A) constrain the frictional condition and (B) detect crustal deformation by using seafloor dense network for earthquake and tsunami.
(A) We have published a paper on an international scientific journal by collaborating with California University Berkeley and Cote d'Azur University (moved from California Institute of Technology.
(B) We have discussed the method to remove ocean fluctuation component by visiting to Massachusetts Institute of Technology and The University of Rhode Island, which brought another opportunity to launch another collaboration research with US Geological Survey and the University of Washington.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

1944年の東南海地震~1946年の南海地震や、1854年の安政地震のように30時間差で発生した事例のように、どうして時間差を伴った海溝型巨大地震が発生するのか、その時間差が異なる要因として地質的にどのような条件の違いがあるのか、について、地震・地質・海底掘削などの観点から検証できる可能性を新たに示した。
これを事前に海底地殻変動として直接検知するために、海底観測網のデータから海洋変動成分をどのようにして分離するのかについて、今後の観測計画を米国研究者と話し合い、米国海洋大気庁(NOAA)をはじめ、当初予定していなかったかたちで共同研究が発展する機会となった。
