| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
An important goal of biomedical research is to translate basic research findings into practical clinical implementation. Despite the advances in the technology used in drug discovery, the development of drugs for central nervous system diseases remains challenging. We have tried to establish microfluidic three-dimensional in vitro blood-brain barrier model. In the process, we found and reported ‘Pericytes protect brain from cancer’ and ‘Primary culture brain endothelial cells are suitable for blood-brain barrier models’.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
本研究結果は大きく二つの意義を提示できる。一つは脳ペリサイト機能を強化する治療戦略で脳転移を予防できることを示し、癌患者のQOL向上に大きく貢献できる可能性を提示した。もう一つは、現在世界で広く使用されている血液脳関門モデルの一部は不適切であることを示すデータを示しており、適切な脳血管内皮細胞を使用し、実験することが中枢神経系疾患治療薬開発に重要であることを提示した。これは薬剤開発の現場での注意を喚起するものである。
