Outline of Final Research Achievements

We studied the possibility of changing the agricultural and livestock industry into a low nitrogen type. First, we analyzed the soil and soil microbes of farms who have grown vegetables with no fertilizer for more than 30 years, and clarified the adaptation of plants in an environment with limited nutrients. We then pointed out the characteristics of the distributor's marketing strategy that convey the value of such products. Second, we evaluated the possibility of dairy farming in mountainous areas in Japan, and clarified that institutional constraints and market competitiveness are severe. Thirdly, we surveyed agriculture in Minami-Awaji, Hyogo prefecture and clarified the current state of efforts for recycling agriculture and the new development of it under the change of social and economic environment.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

無肥料栽培が本当に成立するならば、それは限りなく環境への窒素負荷の少ない農業であるが、その実際は明らかではない。無肥料栽培で生じている現象を科学的に解明することは、無肥料栽培の可能性を信じる生産者や消費者にとって、貴重な情報を提供すると同時に、慣行栽培をどこまでどのような形で低窒素型に転換できるか、その方向性と可能性を示唆するものである。また、無肥料栽培や山地酪農の経営として成立させるためのこれまでの取り組みを明らかにしたことは、慣行農畜産業への転換における社会経済的条件とそこへの働きかけの方法を考える上で有益な情報を与えている。
