Research Abstract |
This research focuses on the area hit by the Great Awaji Hanshin Earthquake, ten years after the disaster occurred. We have surveyed the present situation of the area and discussed the possibility of new designs for communities. We have paid special attention to the ties that allow volunteer and NPO groups to cooperate in a way that transcends community borders and to the communication and support networks that operate in everyday life. We conducted the following three surveys for our research. 1) A large-scale survey of residents of Hyogo prefecture (2006) for the purpose of analyzing networks. The results clearly showed that by participating in a variety of community activities, many people were able to join in networks which supported themselves. In a follow-up to this we surveyed youths (2007) as they were found to have poor participation in community activities. Our results show that while young females form community networks during years of child-rearing, young males tend to be l

imited to friendship groups and thus are isolated from the community. 2) Over a two-year period, in 2006-2007, we surveyed residents of Kobe about NPO and community activities concerning rebuilding of communities and welfare. We were able to identify the process that Kobe groups, which have been active for a long period, had undergone. They brought about change to the institutional environment of NPO and social welfare laws ; cultivated their economic management as well as their identity as an organization ; and constructed new communities. We were also able to identify personal networks which were interwoven with the various groups. 3) We opened a community centre run mainly by students, and while conducting volunteer and community services also carried out our own research by utilizing the internet to gain feedback. By doing so, youths were able to participate actively in the community, thereby gaining a deeper understanding of the community. Moreover, through such activities, these young people were also able to try them had at conceptualizing communities. Less
