Research Abstract

We conducted several experimental studies on eyewitness memory distortion using the MORI Technique, which enabled us to present two different versions of a video movie. We examined the factors related to the interaction among the co-witness pairs, such as their gender, age, social dominance, etc. The experimental results were analyzed statistically in terms of the memory accuracy and the conformity frequency, as well as the confidence of their own answers.
The main outcomes of the present project were as follow.
(1) Refinement of the presentation technique: We have revised the MORI Technique and published it in the professional journal of the behavior research methods (Mori, 2007a). We also invented a new presentation technique as a variation of the MORI Technique. The newly invented technique has been submitted to an academic journal (Mori, 2007b).
(2) Experimental investigation of the effect of sexuality and gender on eyewitness memory: We conducted an experiment with three types of witness pairs; male-male, female-female, and male-female. The results showed that male participants conformed less than female participants. This tendency was more strongly related to the psychological masculinity personality traits than the biological masculinity of the participants. The research results were published in an international academic journal as well as in a Japanese journal (Hirokawa, Matsuno, Ukita, & Mori, 2005).
