Research Abstract |
Recently active researches have been carried out on novel membranes responsive to outer stimulus. Such the membranes are widely applicable for various kinds of fields, for instance drug delivery system, nanomachines, control release etc. Much attention has been paid to organic polymer membranes for its high shaping ability and elasticity. However such the organic polymer membranes are weak to organic solvents and easily swollen by organic solvents and water. For these reasons, it is very difficult to prepare a membrane responsive to outer stimulus with recognition of organic molecule by organic polymer. On the other hand, porous glass membranes which possess relatively sharp pore size distribution are now actively investigated because of their high gas selectivity, ease of control of pore size and easily molding. Inorganic membrane such as porous glass membrane has high resistance for organic compounds and does not have such the swelling. This means the pore size of porous glass membrane is unchanged by swelling. Additionally there is some possibility the speed of response is fast, and can be avoidable for the fatigue of response because of the existence of such the rigid nanopore. In this research, pH, temperature and light responsive membrane with molecular recognition can be obtained successfully by surface modification of the porous glass membrane for the first time.
