Research Abstract

A resonant type optical modulator array with antennas can be an effective converter from micro/millimeter-wave to light wave for the uplink of the radio on fiber system. For realizing this novel device, we have tried the following three themes.
1.Realization of a 10 GHz band resonant type LiNbO_3 optical modulator.
We designed and fabricated the resonant type modulator with a stub electrode or a capacitor, which could work for impedance matching. We clarified that the resonant frequencies and the induced phase shift were strongly depended on the impedance match structure. The half wave voltage of 15 V and 10 GHz operation were demonstrated.
2.Fabrication of a 10 GHz band antenna and integration of the modulators and the antennas.
We fabricated micro strip antennas with resonant frequency of 10 GHz and connected them to four modulators aligned on the optical waveguide of LiNbO_3 by using coaxial metal cable. The highbred integration of the modulators and the antennas was demonstrated.
3.Demonstration of the modulator array operated by the received power of the antennas.
We tried micro wave receiving by the antennas connected to the modulators. A 10 GHz sinusoidal signal was generated from a horn antenna, and irradiated to the antennas. We demonstrated that four aligned modulators could be simultaneously driven by the power received. One percent modulation could be obtained at the input power of 31 dBm to the horn antenna and the distance of 1 m. We confirmed that the optical phase shift induced by the received power was proportional to the number of connected antennas and inversely proportional to the distance between two antennas. More number of arrays will give us an applicative larger phase shift. We demonstrated that our proposed device is available as the converter of the milli-wave to the optical wave.
