Research Abstract |
This study developed the Pictorial Encyclopedia of Japanese residential zones using information corresponding to all residential zone types in the declining age. These types of residential zones include ordinary towns, which have many different residences and demographic patterns of residents. This Pictorial Encyclopedia of Japanese residential zones is a guideline for planning for sustainability and improved quality of life. In addition, this database is useful for realization of a compact city. In addition, this study explains each page of the Encyclopedia, specifically emphasizing residential zones in metropolitan areas, which include world class cities such as Tokyo and Osaka, Japan. Regarding classification of residential zones, this study specifically examined the neighbourhood scale of around 30 ha, not a municipal scale, as in earlier studies. A neighbourhood scale corresponds with an actual policy scale. For that reason, types of residential zones designated in this study can be useful for examination of urban planning policies. This Pictorial Encyclopedia of Japanese residential zones, based on such a classification of residential zones, reports information related to all types of neighbourhood zones using large amounts of data running to about 2000 residential zones in 70 cities with a sample of around 57 000 individuals. The selected index factors for town designations are few. Therefore, the precision is not doubtful. The Pictorial Encyclopedia of Japanese residential zones is a simple system. If the basic data of the characteristics of each town (residential zone) can be collected, such as the location, population density, land-use control, transportation conditions and distance from the city centre, the type of town is identifiable. This Pictorial Encyclopedia of Japanese residential zones provides detailed indicators to facilitate evaluation of a town's compactness.
