Research Abstract |
The aim of this study was to develop a support system for communities to promote good oral health behavior in to order to achieve the goals of 8020. The Oral health promotion committee of Ibbishima 8020 -the village mayoz public health nurses, dental hygienists, dentists and we, the researchers, held a meeting to discuss about the development of an oral health plan. We investigated the oral health status and lifestyle of the local people at an annual health check-up. We recorded the status of oral health and lifestyle in a booklet of oral health we called "8020 SAWAYAKAbooklet". This booklet provides an Oral Salutogenic Score which ranged from O to 20 points. High score represents good status and low score predicts tooth loss. The people of Tobishima who scored 15 points or less were separated into 3 groups randomly. We sent dental hygienists to visit people in the first group. An original leaflet of good oral health behavior which is related to the Oral Salutogenic Score was mailed to the second group 3 times a year The same leaflet was mailed to the third group once a year We evaluated the change of the Oral Salutogenic Score in a 3 year follow up. The first group who had dental hygienists visited them and the second group who had received the leaflet 3 times a year had a bigger increase of the Oral Salutogenic Score than the third group who had the leaflet once a year. Our study concluded the achievement of better oral health with the visit of dental hygienists and frequency of exposure to information of good oral health behavior.
