Research Abstract |
This research was carried out between April 2004 and March 2007 and focused on the problem of HIV/AIDS, as an infectious disease. In order to look for a new effective model to offer a better medical treatment and to look for effective policies to avoid its diffusion, we carried out a series of surveys in Tanzania (Africa), Mexico (North America), Cambodia and Singapore (Asia), Samoa and Papua New Guinea (Oceania). Our approach was multidisciplinary and based especially on the medical, psychological, educational and anthropological sciences' points of view. Our results show that the problem of HIV/AIDS is most critical in the most underdeveloped countries from Africa to Oceania. In spite of its importance, many governments are not attending this problem in an effective way and even they have not advanced in the basic step of educating the people in the use of condoms. Also, their policies are not adequate to promote the active participation of NGO groups and community leaders. It is important for all of HIV/AIDS stakeholders to develop a medical pluralistic approach that considers the gender culture of the community and the participation of high risks groups in order to get their understanding and cooperation in fighting this disease. We are planning an extended research for the years 2008-2013, based with this one.
