| Research Abstract |
Though Open Archival Information Systems (OAIS) are useful for long-term preservation of information, more long-term preservation can be expected if OAISs can mutually deposit their own archival information in other systems.
In this research, we propose a model for that purpose. The Archival Information Package (AIP), the basic unit for archival information in the OAIS reference model, consists of two sections : the Content Information (CI) and the Preservation Description Information (PDI). Both CI and PDI of an AIP in the source system are enclosed in a bag and the bag is deposited in the CI of an AIP in the destination system. This method eliminates the necessity of rewriting the AIP of the source system into that of the destination system and simplifies deposition between those OAISs that have different data formats for archival objects.
At the destination system, the manual for the method of opening will be deposited together with the bag. Even if the source system someday disappears, the deposited information will survive in the destination system. Because the manual for the method of opening is also deposited, the destination system can recover the original information by opening the bag according to the manual.
By deeming DSpace as an OAIS, we have implemented a deposition model for a collection of AIPs and have verified the model.
