Research Abstract

Accurate and quantitative analysis of human hand motion requires an understanding of the joint kinematics. For this purpose, we first proposed the system that identifies position and orientation (=configuration) of hand bones from magnetic resonance (MR) volume image by registration of bone model. Investigation of a link structure of a human hand requires to measure the relative movement of the bones by identifying each bone configuration among a large number of hand poses of the same subject. To save total time to acquire bone configurations, (1)Bone surface polygon is generated as a bone model by manually extracting the bone region from one of the MR scanning data. (2)Initial configuration of the bone model is settled manually ; and (3)The bone model is aligned in MRI voxel data to maximize the performance indices. Experiment results show the validity of the identified configuration of the bones by the proposed system compared with manually segmented bone polygon configuration.
Then we characterized finger joint kinematics. Using an extracted bone surface model, the relative motion of the adjacent bone was calculated and expressed as the helical axis and the Euler angle. The motion data indicated that the axis of rotation changes with flexion. After carefully selecting the subject and a pose with an appropriate flexional angle, studies determined that the mean inclination between the axes of the proximal and distal interphalangeal joints was approximately 14°. We also described the methodology for analyzing skin movement with respect to the predefined flexional motion of the hand. The standard deviation of the skin movement on the second metacarpal of the index finger with respect to the predefined flexional motion ranged from 0.45 to 0.74 mm.
