| Research Abstract |
In the present study, we developed the non-contact input device and remote nursing support system. The non-contact input device required the information of the eye position and blink condition. The eye position in a face image captured by CCD camera was detected with the cross-shaped partial eye template and surrounding eye features. The variation of iris area detected the blink. The mouse cursor was controlled by eye movement. The click and double clicks were executed by intentional blinks. For evaluating the input device with click and double clicks function by blink, normal persons in their twenties participated in the experiment. The experimental results showed that all subjects stably executed both click and double clicks. On the other hand, the disabled people would require easier and rapid input method. Thus, we also developed another click algorithm that the click was executed by only keeping the stationary gaze in a specific area for a pre-determined time.

pport system consisted of a server PC and several client PCs. The client application software installed on the client PC adopted the direct menu-selection method. The patient selected a request item by clicking a request button arranged on the client application window. The selected request was announced by voice on the client PC and sent to the server PC. The request received on server PC was notified by text and voice. The nurse responded to patient's requests by clicking the response buttons. The unacknowledged request forwarded to a cellular phone carried by the nurse. The client application software had also switch functions to control the illumination and television, etc. The device operations such as turning on the room light and changing the TV channel were performed via a remote controller connected to the client PC. To evaluate the client application and the non-contact input device with stationary gaze input method, an ALS patient (male) in forties operated the system. The experimental result indicated that the available region to control the mouse cursor was limited around the initial eye position. New client application software was developed on the basis of the experimental result. By adopting the scanning method of request items having a hierarchical and divergent structure, the many requests could be arranged in the limited region.
