Research Abstract |
A purpose of this study is clarifying the role of women's centers, which carry out changing stereotyped gender role concept of man and woman. Women's center is a lifelong education institution in Gender-equal Society. In 2004, I surveyed women and men who attended the seminars of women's studies/ gender studies at women's centers on the stereotyped gender role consciousness. In 2005 and in 2006, I interviewed four women and four men, who were answering that "stereotyped gender role consciousness changed" after the seminars participation. Also I interviewed three women who were answering that "gender role consciousness did not change" after the seminars. Summary of the findings is as follows. According to the survey, women and men who had changed of stereotyped gender role consciousness were 10-30% of each 13 items. According to the interview, there was a great difference between women and men in reasons to attend the seminar. Regarding young women in the age of twenties and thirties, the reasons attending the seminars were that they can meet similar friends and put their children in the temporary day care center while they are attending the seminar. However, in the seminar, they watched the video, and the staff of women's centers explained about gender equal society, and then they have changed stereotyped gender role consciousness. On the other hand, four men had already changed stereotyped gender role consciousness in the past, and confirmed changes of consciousness in the seminar again. Regarding them, it is outcome of consciousness changes that they are attending seminars and coming to women's center. Male interviewees not only attend women's/gender studies but also participate in various events of women's center.
