| Research Abstract |
In 2005, we tried to figure out philosophical and methodological problems concerning Chaos studies. In order to do that, we held general meetings in Kyoto University and Hokkaido University in which all the members attended and raised some important questions. At Kyoto University, we also held several smaller meetings in which we interviewed some researchers in related areas and invited speakers without our research group. Also we employed occasionally graduate students and post doctoral fellows to execute computer simulations and statistical analysis on one or another Chaos models. In those researches, we used computers that were bought by our JSPS fund. In particular, Kita and Deguchi interviewed a scholar who did one of the first computer simulations in Japan, identified and analyzed methodological problems in the study, and presented our analysis at an oversea conference.
In the light of the research activities above mentioned, the following important problems and insight were obtained.
1 We need to enlarge the conventional ideas of scientific empirical testability in order to do empirical research on Chaos.
2 There are several conceptual problem in statistical techniques that are to be applied to Chaos studies.
3 In computer simulations there are a new sort of interrelationship between research personals and computers that has been long overlooked.
The new sort of interrelationship has an important consequences, among others, that should result in our rethinking of agency of scientific research.
