Research Abstract |
In this project, we aim to have a clear view of what changes happen in Japanese public opinion since 1990's. The method is that of a detached perspective of intellectual history. Around these years, big events took place successively such as the end of the Cold War, the dissolution of socialist regime, the outbreak of the Gulf War, Chinese acceleration in its reform policy, and the democratization in Korea. The situation pushes Japan to search for new strategies including the revision of the present Constitution. Also with bubbly economy and its burst as well as the bringing forth of new liberal reforms, various social bonds like family, firm, and community which had formed the backbone of Japanese society in the postwar periods begin to lose power to tie people ; atomization is in progress and identity crisis is widely felt. The Japanese security myth seems to have gone. In this project, we chose such topics as nationalist trends, views of Asia, theories on civil society, assessments of social sciences, and attitudes toward the emperor system, all of which are great issues in public opinion these days, and tried to analyze what their transforming facets mean in postwar Japanese intellectual history, in relation to social and international backgrounds, above mentioned. Five articles will appear in the special issue of "The Journal of Social Science", Vol.58, No.1.
