Research Abstract |
(1)In 2004, I tried to describe and analyze the historical development of European narrative paintings. For that purpose I collected a body of literature on art history, Rezeptionsasthetik, and filmology, and investigated them critically. On the other hand, I visited the British Library and tried to survey and collect as many book illustrations published from the Middle Ages to the nineteenth century as possible. Within the country, I also visited some major university libraries and tried to survey and collect the book illustrations published since Meiji Era. As the result of these investigations, I presented a paper 'Is Visual Metaphor Possible?' on the 16^<th> International Congress of Aesthetics at RiodeJaneiro in 2004. I also published three papers concerning this project listed at the following references. (2)In 2005, I set about a naratological analysis of illustrations of modern novels. For the purpose, I visited this time the Bibliotheque Nationale of France and the Staatsbibliothek in Munich and Berlin. By the investigation of these resources I tried to analyze the parallelism of the narrative modes of modern novels and illustrations attached to them. Then, on the basis of the results, I aimed to analyze the parallelism between the development of Japanese modern novels based on European modern novels and the development of Japanese book illustrations. As the results of the researches, I read a paper 'The Points of View in the Narration of Paintings' on the 56^<th> Central Meeting of Japanese Society for Aesthetics at Keio University. I also published two papers listed in the following references.
