| Research Abstract |
On her pilgrimage to Jerusalem, Margery Kempe passed through Constance presumably sometime between autumn 1413 and early 1414, at the time when the city was preparing for the forthcoming council. One of the major issues of the council was the authenticity of St Bridget of Sweden's revelations. Even after her canonization and its subsequent confirmation, many delegates to the Council of Constance (1414-1418) questioned the divine origin of her visions and connected the issue with schism and heresy. The tension continued into the Council of Basle (1431-1449), which was in progress when Margery revised the first version of her book. By examining the politico-religious circumstances, this research concludes that the issue of discretio spirituum surrounding Bridget's canonization implicitly affects the way Margery created her book, and sheds light on her efforts at presenting herself as vigilant of discretio spirituum, efforts which will legitimatise the authenticity of her own spiritual experience.
