Research Abstract |
The problem of clitics has often been studied in respect to the European languages. We tried in this project to study the problem from a wider perspective and to observe some of the variations clitics show, especially on the data of two non-European languages (native languages of North America), Coast Tsimshian and Sliammon. Clitics are elements that do not have properties of independent word and are uttered together with the neighboring word. The distinction of clitics and affixes are often problematic. The members of this project conducted fieldwork in Canada during the period and collected data on clitics in Coast Tsimshian and Sliammon. On these data, we investigated the characteristics of the clitics in these languages and set up criteria for distinguishing clitics from affixes. We have clarified through this project some of the characteristics of non-European languages and the distinction between clitics and affixes.
