Research Abstract |
The objective of this research is to develop English e-learning materials appropriate for engineering students. The areas included in this research are 1) basic theoretical study of corpus and e-learning, 2) compiling corpus data including their refinement, 3) application of the corpus analysis results to e-learning materials. The basic theoretical study and the corpus data collection were continued over a period of three years. In the last two years, 2005 and 2006, we developed e-learning materials based on an analysis of the corpus data, and we also used the historical data of the learners to improve the materials. 1)Basic Theoretical Study of Corpus and E-learning We went through the materials and books of corpus study and e-learning. We also attended conferences and workshops to study and to present our papers. (JACET, JAECS, NIME, EUROCALL, KES and JSET) 2)Compiling Corpus Data We compiled a corpus of 6 million words by adding more text data from the journal articles for information technology, civil engineering, and applied physics. 3)Development of E-learning Materials A trial version of an e-learning material focusing on sentence structure was developed in 2005. This was based on reading an abstract of a journal article with POS tag and semantic tag information. Based on learners' feedback, this material was improved in 2006 and the learners were provided with a pop-up dictionary and comprehension questions. In addition, we developed vocabulary learning materials, both passive and active, specifically for mobile phones. Sub-technical words were defined based on the corpus analysis, and we put the words in the distributed practice system as an e-learning material, which was applied both to e-learning on the web and to mobile learning.
