Research Abstract |
It is well known that Johannes Itten was one of the great art educator. He was very interested in Asia, including Japan. In Itten-Schule(1926-1934) Itten invited two Japanese painters for Sumi-ink drawing classes. I already clarified the detail of Sumi-ink drawing classes by Yumeji Takehisa and Shounan Mizukoshi at the Itten-Schule. I made clear that Itten introduced Sumi-ink drawing as a part of his art education curriculum. In this research project, I researched the original documents (including private diary and letters) and works of Johannes Itten in Europe. And I researched the related documents in Japan. I had an opportunity to research Sumi-ink drawings of Itten-Schule's students in classes by Yumeji. These Sumi-ink drawing were recently discovered. It made clear more detail of Yumeji's Art education at the Itten-Schule. I also clarified the relation between Johannes Itten's Art Education and Art Educational Book"Kousei-Kyouiku-Taikei"in Japan. Furthermore, through the research on Itten's private diary, I clarified Itten's pursuit of Sumi-ink drawing and Japanese Zen. In Europe, I discussed with some researchers on Bauhaus. Some of my research articles(English translation) were kept in Bauhaus-Archiv Berlin. In December 2005, I was invited for the International conference"Esoterik am Bauhaus- Eine Revision der Moderne?"held in the Gustav-Lubcke-Museum, Hamm in Germany. At that time the exhibition"Johannes Itten- Wassily Kandinsky- Paul Klee, Das Bauhaus and die Esoterik"was opened at the Gustav-Lubcke-Museum(from September 2005 to January 2006). In the International conference, famous researchers on Bauhaus gave the research presentation. There were Dr.Jeaggi (Director of Bauhaus-Archiv Berlin), Dr.Droste, Dr.Wagner, and so on. At the International conference, I gave a research presentation"Johannes Itten and Zen"in English.
