Research Abstract

The electron-transfer (ET) fluorescence quenching of aromatic molecule and the back ET within the geminate radical ion pairs were studied in a viscous solvent (ethylene glycol) using aromatic molecules and trivalent lanthanide ions as quenchers. The present results were compared with the previous results obtained in a non-viscous solvent (acetonitrile) to make clear the effects of solvent viscosity on the ET fluorescence quenching and back ET. It was found that the rate of ET depends on the solvent viscosity only through the diffusion coefficients of electron donor and acceptor, and hence, the free energy dependence of fluorescence quenching mechanism is not affected by the solvent viscosity.
