Research Abstract

Permanent-magnet(PM) synchronous generators have several advantages, including simple rotor structures and high efficiency. However, because the PM flux is constant, the air gap flux is difficult to control. On the other hand, wound rotor synchronous generators can control the air gap flux by means of the field current. Therefore, if a synchronous generator with the features of a PM and wound rotors were to be developed, it would enhance the practical application potential of such generators.
The author proposes a hybrid excitation single-phase synchronous generator with a PM and wound rotors. This hybrid excitation single-phase synchronous generator has distinct advantages over conventional PM or wound rotor synchronous machines. The PM rotor part of the proposed hybrid excitation single-phase synchronous generator would provide high efficiency, and the wound rotor part would allow true field regulation and field strengthening operation.
Unlike other types of synchronous machines, the proposed hybrid excitation single-phase synchronous generator has one PM and one wound field separately mounted on the same shaft.
In this report, the performance of a hybrid excitation single-phase synchronous generator is described. A two-pole experimental machine was made with 0.5kVA, 100V, and 60Hz. For test purposes, the prototype machine was driven by a 3.7kW induction motor. The resistance load characteristics when the prototype machine is driven at 3,600 min^<-1> are shown. The armature voltage can be largely controlled by adjusting the field current.
