Research Abstract

A General orthogonal modulation is a modulation model, which expresses any orthogonal modulations by the multidimensional rotations. The parameter of the model is a sequence of rotation planes and rotation angles. In this work, multidimensional orthogonal systems have been developed by the general orthogonal modulation for locally optimal modulations with the adaptation to the channel conditions. The results of the work are summarized as follows.
(1) In multiple access systems, the fading destroys a signal orthogonality among users, and causes a serious performance degradation due to a multi-user interference. A class of modulations is proved to have multi-user interference free characteristics even in the fading channel. The parameters of this modulation class are presented with the possible optimization effects against fading.
(2) The new modulation classification method is presented. The method is based on the joint moment of received signal amplitude and phase. The classification error probability is derived in a form of the infinite series of elementary functions, and numerical results of the classification probability for Binary Phase Shift Keying, Quadrature Phase Shift Keying and Quadrature Amplitude Modulation show the superior classification performance. In order to improve the classification performance, the phase shift and the linear transform of amplitude and phase are also proposed.
(3) An orthogonal modulation classification is developed by the general orthogonal modulation. The classification estimates the modulation parameters of rotation planes and angles from the received samples. The samples are divided into signal point clusters. The number of clusters are reduced by rotations to some clusters required to estimate the parameters. Numerical results demonstrate the orthogonal modulation identification, such as QPSK and OFDM.
