Research Abstract

The purpose of this study is to propose the method strengthening the existing reinforced concrete (RC) column with RC sidewalls using the polymer-cement mortar. It is expected that the structural performance of existing reinforced concrete column with sidewalls would be controllable by the method to select the strengthening area (sidewalls or/and column).
The shear-loading tests for the RC column with sidewalls were conducted to clarify the effect of the method. Six specimens, which were modeled with a scale of 1/2, were prepared. The section of column was 300x300mm, height of column was 900mm length of sidewall was 600mm, and the thickness of sidewall was 60mm. The shear reinforcement was adhered on the surface of existing member by using polymer-cement mortar. The stress between existing members and strengthened parts was transferred by adhesion of the polymer-cement mortar. Furthermore, in order to evaluate the improvement of shear strength, the adhesive strength test was carried out.
The following result was obtained from tests ;
1)The structural performance of existing RC column with RC sidewalls was improved by adhered shear reinforcement using polymer-cement mortar.
2)If the sidewall was strengthened using polymer-cement mortar, the shear capacity of RC column with sidewall was increase. If the column was strengthened using polymer-cement mortar, the ductility of that was increase. So, the capacity (shear strength and flexural ductility) and failure mode of the RC column with sidewall is controllable by the method to select the strengthening area (sidewalls or/and column).
3)As the amount of shear reinforcement increased, the shear capacity or/and ductility increased.
4)The adhesive strength of the polymer-cement mortar to the existing concrete was about 1.5N/mm2 and was high value.
