| Research Abstract |
We have done research on 26 mentally ill persons who regularly visit 4 rehabilitation center - a NPO corporate coffee shop, a communal workshop, a vocational aid center and a local life support center where we had personal computers (PC) installed for those 26 subjects to use. The items of survey instrument were age, sex, relationship with their social supporters and the number of those supporters, self-esteem scale (Rosenberg(1982) ; SE), role cognition, and the things of before- and-after PC use - using days and hours per week, purposes, and so on.
We found that the subjects' SE scores, although those of mentally ill persons are usually considered low, were above the average, and no correlation between SE and age was found in the subjects. We surmised that the subjects with high SE scores have many SS and the well established social support network, but no correlation between SE and the number of SS was found.

correlation between the age of the subjects and the PC using hours (per day) in the beginning and 3 months later. The purposes of the PC use were information retrieval, e-mail, and so on, and there were not significant changes in PC use between 3 and 6 months later. The role cognitions of the subjects were mostly those at home or on business. The subjects participated in our survey consisted of men (65.4%) and women (34.6%) ; two thirds were male. The characteristics of subjects were as follows : age=34, SE score=31, number of SS=4.5 ; in the beginning of PC use, sum of using minutes a week=86.25 (m/week), PC using days per week=2 (day/week), PC using minutes per day=30 (m/day) ; after three months of PC using, sum of using minutes per week=30 (m/week), PC using days per week=2 (day/week), PC using minutes per day=25 (m/day). Our findings show that the mentally ill persons who participated in our survey and were interested in the Web, (two thirds of them were male), have high SE scores, recognize their roles to some degree, and have many social supporters. And we strongly suggested the need of training and helping PC volunteers for supporting mentally ill persons as the shortage of those volunteers has been proved by our survey. Less
