| Research Abstract |
In FY 2004, we further analyzed the literature in Japan and abroad to investigate the current state of care of families in psychiatric hospitals or wards in Japan, particularly the status of and problems with support of families of patients in the acute phase.
In FY 2005, we aimed to elucidate the perspective of family assessment from the viewpoint of nurses, trying to perform assessment of and provide nursing intervention for families of patients with acute phase of schizophrenia or similar psychoses from admission. We conducted an interview with 10 nurses who had been working in a department of psychiatry for at least 5 years about families of patients in the acute phase. In FY 2006, the 36 support services for families of patients in the acute phase selected based on interviews with nurses were classified into the following categories : cognitional intervention, behavioral intervention, emotional intervention, and establishment of a therapeutic relationship or assessment of the family. Subsequently, we performed a questionnaire survey of the state of the performance of these support services and the extent of their necessity among nurses and families. To select nurses, 294 psychiatric hospitals in Japan were selected at random, and nurses who had been working in the department of psychiatry for at least 5 years were asked through the department of nursing to cooperate in the survey. To select families, we asked prefectural branches of family associations to send the questionnaire. It was found that 33 of the 36 selected services were recognized as necessary care by at least 80% of both families and nurses. Nurses and families had similar (not significantly different) recognition of the necessity of 16 services, while they had different recognition of the necessity of 17 services.
