Research Abstract |
Through this research, the authors made many experiments using fluid on the assumption that these experiments should be done in the environment of microgravity. The experiments aims at realization of artistic activities in the International Space Station, especially in the Japanese Experiment Module named "KIBO." The authors also examined effective method to let people understand what the space looks like. One experiment is to oscillate a drop of water or mercury put on the plate by exposing the drop to periodic wind coming from loud speakers. Another experiment is to oscillate and deform a drop of magnetic fluid hang in water by pressing and releasing the drop with rods. The density of the magnetic fluid can be set exactly same as that of water, so that this experiment can simulate the behavior of a drop in microgravity successfully. The experiments are recorded as video for further investigations. From the experiments, the authors found that it seems difficult to freeze the drop instantaneously and bring it back to Earth. However, the experiments of oscillating drop show that behavior of a fluid drop put in microgravity is interesting even from the point of fine arts. Some experiments are easy to be preformed in the International Space Station. Such performance using fluid in space also seems to be useful for people to understand the environment of space. One of the experiments has been submitted to Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency as a proposal of Artistic Experiments in Space.
