今年度は、昨年度に引き続き、英語の'sを伴う所有表現(NP_1's NP_2)に関わる資料を収集し、データベース化した。特に、この種の所有表現を(1)部分全体関係を表す表現(the churche's entrance),(2)身体の一部分を表す表現(John's hands, the cat's tail),(3)親族関係を表す表現(John's father, Mary's cousin, Bill's children),(4)いわゆる関係語とよばれる表現(John's employer, the room's occupant),(5)時間関係を表す表現(yesterday's work, tomorrow's conference, last year's news)に分類して資料を収集した。資料は主にインタネット(新聞、雑誌等)や電子化されてコーパスである「ICAME COLLECTION」とBritish National Corpusを利用した。
先行研究としてQuirk et.al(1972)とHawkins(1981)がある。前者はGender Scale(human male and female < human dual < human common < human collective < higher animals < higher organisms < lower animals < inanimates)を提案し、このスケールで左側にある要素が'sの形式を伴って右側の要素をとる(たとえば、human male(=John)<inanimate(=book)であればJohn's bookとなる)と説明する。また、後者はAnimacy Hierarchy(human < human attribute < non-human animate < non-human inanimate))を仮定し、所有表現の分布を説明する。
本研究で収集された資料を検討した結果、所有表現形式NP_1's NP_2では、NP_1に生じるのは[human]が一番多く、次に[animal]が用いられることが分かった。その際、NP_1とNP_2がともに[human]である場合、この2つのNPの間に親族関係があるケース(John's brother)が多い。また、NP_1が[human]でNP_2が[inanimate]である場合、両者の間には身体の一部分を示す関係がみられた。これに対して、NP_1には[inanimate]はあまり多くは生起しないが、生起する場合には部分と全体の関係を示すケース(the hotel's hall)が殆どであった。
