Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Main goal of this study is to evaluate efficient water use strategy for the main crops in the river basin. The measures consider food security to maximize use of the available water resources for the main three crops grown in the river basin. Using our framework, water requirement for the crops including assessments of the water availability factors to several crops were estimated and presented. Water salinity map of the basin were prepared based on field observations, made in high irrigation season and municipalities provided data. As it was expected, downstream area are significantly prone to the water mineralization and requires significant amounts of water to be applied. Finding water salinity helps to define crops productivity in that areas. The map is important measure for crops productivity used to predict water to crop requirement. Using this year's outcomes we were able to improve our analysis and show that the impact of the reduced water flow will be quite noticeable in the near future. Results of this research were presented in the World Water Congress, and International seminar on “Innovations in Marginal Water Resource Use for Resilient Agriculture and Food Security” organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Academy of Science of the Uzbekistan. The seminar in Tashkent, was broadly covered by the main TV channels and newspapers and addressed one of main issues on improving water usage efficiency. Research tour with the JSCE to introduce environmental issues in Uzbekistan and visit former Aral Sea bed area in Uzbekistan were organized.
