Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Strawberry plants when experiences autotoxicity in recycled hydroponics exudates benzoic acid as their potential allelochemical. Exogenous application of benzoic acid showed gradual inhibition of growth of strawberry plantlets with the increase in concentration. It also found that, strawberry root injury start from 25 μM/L benzoic acid in the nutrient solution. Roots showed black discoloration and lower activity after this concentration. Compared to control, roots from benzoic acid concentrations showed intense color during NBT and DAB test, which indicate that allelochemical/ benzoic acid created stress condition to strawberry roots. Enzymatic reactions also showed up-regulation of SOD, POD, CAT, and APX activity while showed down regulation of MDA, O2.- and H2O2 activity.
