I have continued to develop my book manuscript on the history of life insurance in Japan. I have become particularly interested in how discourses of mutual assistance or mutual aid functioned within this larger process of commodifying and governing. Life insurance often presents itself as a modern successor to the "ko" of premodern Japan or the kye of premodern Korea. Yet, there are always debates about how and to what degree mutual assistance is supposed to function. In the industries’ early period, for example, there is a significant debate about whether mutual or stock companies represent the best means of protecting consumers. These debates continue in the formation of the state-run postal life insurance system, in the colonies, and during the wartime period.

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
I have followed much of my research plan, but also experienced a few unexpected delays. I had anticipated having the last chapter of my book focus on saleswomen in postwar Japan. However, while the saleswoman was undoubtedly an important part of the postwar reconstruction of the life insurance industry, she does not appear to have been the target of much writing. This has been surprising to me and I am now trying to determine whether I will be able to pursue this topic. If not, I also need to decide whether I need to replace it with a different chapter. Aside from this, I researched and completed writing a chapter on insurance in colonial Korea. I also revised and submitted a chapter that was accepted by Japan focus.

| Strategy for Future Research Activity |
My time in Japan is unfortunately nearly finished. In my remaining few weeks, I will continue researching and writing my first chapter, which will focus on the origins of the life insurance industry, especially as it relates to discourses around mutual aid. I will also analyze the failed Nitto life insurance company and the proto-insurance 500 meisha. I will also continue to look for material related to saleswomen in postwar Japan, although, as stated, I have not had much luck in finding materials here.
