It is aimed at investigating the significance of studying/teaching literatures in English(es) in Asia.
Anglophone literature was studied and taught in Asia before 1945 as a resource to acquire knowledge about the West as embodiment of modernization. Asian cultural identities were constructed through conversation with the West. After Japan's defeat in 1945, the significance of studying/teaching literatures in English(es) underwent tremendous changes. Studying/teaching literatures in English(es) in Asia became a part of American Cold War hegemony.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
文学を学び研究することは、短期間での目に見える実益にはつながらないかもしれないが、人間性の理解や、歴史や文化の理解に役立つという考えに基づき、英米文学を20世紀の日本およびアジアで研究・教育することの意味を研究した。
学術的には、韓国、台湾、日本、フィリピン、アメリカなどの研究者と協働して研究を行い、日本における英米文学研究を、グローバルな視点から捉えることができた。社会的には、英文学を含んだ文学の教育・研究には、文学を読む楽しみに加え、文学を通じて時代や社会を理解する助けとなるという役割があることを明らかにした。
