Outline of Final Research Achievements

In real life, whenever we try to choose something we like, we naturally check the relevant information. Traditionally, it has been thought that the more we look at something, the more we tend to develop a preference for it. In short, viewing leads to liking. However, in cognitive science, attention is often discussed as type of function for information integration. Thus, there were two alternative theories: a choice-commitment hypothesis, which claims that viewing leads to liking, and a information-integration hypothesis, which claims that viewing leads to increase of memory representation and perceptual detail, but not necessarily more liking. In a series of studies, we found consistent evidence for the information-integration hypothesis. Viewing leads to more information, especially under uncertainty or doubt, when people don't know right away whether they like what they see. But, longer viewing does not always lead to more liking, just better knowledge about the items in focus.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
