Outline of Final Research Achievements

We found that gametes of a marine green alga, Monostroma angicava, have two parthenogenetic pathways (i.e., developing into either a parthenosporophyte or parthenogametophyte) in both sexes. The probability that a gamete develops into either a parthenosporophyte or parthenogametophyte did not depend on its size. However, the partheogenetic gamete survival through developing into either a parthenosporophyte or parthenogametophyte positively depended on gamete size. Our theoretical study on the evolution of anisogamy in which we took gamete parthenogenesis into account suggests that large isogamy would be evolutionarily stable if unfused gametes can develop parthenogenetically. Our field study and culture experiments supported this theoretical prediction.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

多くの真核生物において雄と雌の間に形態的・行動的な違いの進化が広く見られる。異型配偶はその最も根本的な要因となっている。それは、小さくてたくさん生産される精子が、大きくて少ししか生産できない卵をめぐって競争するためである。これが性淘汰を引き起こし、この競争を有利にする形質が選択される。このため、配偶子に異型性が進化する機構を解明することは二つの性がなぜ違うのかを理解することに繋がる学術的のみならず社会的にも重要な意義がある。本研究では、単為発生をはじめとする配偶子から始まる多様な生活史経路の存在が異型配偶の進化において果たしている役割の主要な部分について解明することが出来た。
