Outline of Final Research Achievements |
International collaborative research-field investigations were conducted at Lake Baikal, Russia, using research vessels to study subsurface methane hydrate formation at the ancient lacustrine sediment/stratum. Multibeam echosounder surveys and sub-bottom profiler surveys were conducted to prepare high-resolution bathymetric map at the study areas. Sediment core sampling operations were carried out at a mound/mud volcano-like bottom area. Sub-surface methane hydrates containing not only microbial-methane but also thermogenic-methane were first retrieved off southern coast of the south basin. Hydrogen and oxygen isotopic anomalies observed in the sediment pore waters from the studied area suggests clay mineral dehydration at the depth. All results obtained during this study suggest potential relationship between multiphase methane hydrate formation and the ancient sediment/stratum under the studied area.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
世界で唯一メタンハイドレート(MH)の存在が確認されている淡水湖であるバイカル湖において、最古堆積物域に発現するMHの多様性と生成機構の解明を目的に、日本-ロシア-ベルギーの国際共同研究を実施した。 湖底表層MH生成には湖底下の堆積物中でメタンが発生し湖底表層に輸送されることが必要であり、そのメタンは主として堆積物中の有機物が微生物か熱により分解されて発生する。従ってMH サイトの分布は湖底下の堆積物分布にコントロールされていると考えられるが不明な点が多い。 本研究ではバイカル湖南湖盆南岸沖で総合調査を行った結果、湖底表層MHの多様性と生成機構には最古堆積物が関係していることを明らかにした。
