Outline of Final Research Achievements

Triple oxygen isotopic analysis is useful tool to elucidate formation pathways for atmospheric sulfate and nitrate. In this study, we develop new system measuring triple oxygen isotopic compositions of several sulfate/nitrate samples including cryospheric samples. By using this method, we investigated the triple oxygen isotopic compositions of sulfate and nitrate preserved in ice core drilled at SE-Dome, Greenland.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

1970年代以降のSO2やNOxの排出規制にも関わらず、大気エアロゾル及びその主要無機成分である硫酸・硝酸エアロゾル濃度の減少が鈍化するフィードバック機構が知られている。本研究では、アイスコア中のエアロゾル物質の三酸素同位体組成分析により、過去の大気酸化過程が排出抑制に応じて変化していたことを発見し、エアロゾル濃度現象の鈍化を引き起こすメカニズムを提唱した。
