Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In a previous human study, swallowing events were observed more frequently after intra-esophageal acid infusion than after saline infusion. however, the association between salivation and swallowing events remains poorly investigated to date.We simultaneously recorded salivation and swallowing using an electrode attached to the mylohyoid muscle during vagal afferent stimulation in a physiological range of frequencies. As a result, Vagal afferent stimulation significantly increased salivation and swallowing-like events in a frequency-dependent manner. These results indicate that visceral sensation induces salivation and swallowing-like events through vagal afferent activation.
