Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究では、電子の電気双極子能率(EDM)をフランシウム(Fr)原子を用いて探索するための高精度探索技術の確立を目指して研究を行った。電子EDMは時間反転対称性や空間反転対称性の破れを表す物理量であるためその大きさは極めて小さいが、重い原子においてはその効果が増幅されることが分かっている。そこで本研究では、Fr原子EDMを高精度に測定するために用いる共存磁力計の開発を行った。
Fr原子EDMを測定するためには、原子に電場を印加した場合のエネルギー変化を測定するが、この際に原子を保持するための光格子と量子化軸を定めるために印加する静磁場によっても原子にエネルギー変化が生じるため、これらの変動を抑制すると同時に精密に測定することが重要となる。そこで、Fr原子とともにEDM増幅率の小さいルビジウム(Rb)原子を同時に光格子中に捕獲し静磁場や光格子の変動を測定する光格子共存磁力計の開発を行った。
平成29年度までに1台の光源と電気光学変調器を用いて二核種のRb原子を磁気光学トラップ(MOT)により効率よく捕獲することに成功しており、今年度は二核種MOT中の原子を核種ごとにイメージングするため、光源を2台に増強させたうえで吸収イメージングを行った。これにより、トラップ中の原子を核種ごとにイメージングできただけでなく、それぞれの各種の温度測定を行うことができた。
また、MOTによって冷却された原子を用いた磁場観測を行った。MOTによって冷却された原子を磁場中で光ポンピングすると、原子はスピン歳差運動を行う。原子がスピン歳差運動することで、屈折率が変化する。原子にプローブ光を照射し透過光の偏光面の時間変化を観測することで、Rb原子のそれぞれの核種と二核種同時での測定をそれぞれ成功させることができた。以上のように、共存磁力計開発で重要となる原理検証を完了させることができた。
