Outline of Annual Research Achievements

平成29年度において、米国ブルックヘブン国立研究所にあるRHIC加速器を用いた高エネルギー重イオン衝突PHENIX実験を推進して、宇宙開闢から10μ秒以内に存在したクォーク・グルーオン・プラズマの物理的性質の解明を目指した。約2兆度以上の超高温状態では、強い相互作用の持つ漸近的自由性によりクォークやグルーオン間の結合力が弱まり、ハドロン内の閉じ込めから解放されることで、クォーク・グルーオン・プラズマが形成される。
本研究では、高エネルギー重イオン衝突実験により約4兆度の超高温物質状態を作り出して、QGPの物理的性質を実験的に研究している。QGP中におけるクォークのエネルギー損失量を測定することで、QGPのパートン密度や比粘性の物性情報を引き出すことが可能となる。特に本研究では、QGP物性研究のプローブとして、QGPの温度よりも質量の大きいチャームクォークおよびボトムクォークに着目している。これらは、生成過程がQGP生成前の初期パートン散乱に限られ、さらにQGP中での生成および消滅もほとんどないため、QGPの時間発展の情報を保持している重要なプローブである。申請者は、チャーム・ボトムクォークを含むハドロンの寿命の長さ(~300μm)と崩壊比の高いsemi-leptonic崩壊チャンネル(~10%)に着目して、シリコン飛跡検出器で測定したビーム衝突点と崩壊電子の最近接距離を用いて、チャームハドロンとボトムハドロン崩壊電子の不変収量を分離測定した。さらにQGP媒質による効果が無視できる陽子相互衝突実験の測定結果により規格化することで、QGP中におけるチャームクォークおよびボトムクォークのエネルギー損失量の衝突中心度依存性を測定した。これらの系統的研究により、ボトムクォークのエネルギー損失量がチャームクォークより小さいこを発見して、エネルギー損失のクォーク質量依存性を明らかにした。
