Outline of Annual Research Achievements

根毛は、植物の根の表面にある毛のような組織である。根の表面積を大きくすることで、土壌からの水や栄養素の効率的な吸収に寄与する。根毛の長さは植物の生育する環境に応答し、一般に栄養が豊富な環境では根毛の成長が抑制され、逆に栄養が不足している環境下は根毛の成長が促進される。すなわち、植物は自身の置かれた環境に対して適切な長さを調節していると考えられる。一方で、その分子機構の多くは未解明である。本研究では、その根毛の柔軟な成長制御機構を転写制御という観点から明らかにするために、転写因子による根毛の成長制御機構の解明を行ってきた。
本研究の初年度では、根毛の成長を制御する転写因子のスクリーニングを実施し、未解明の転写因子-遺伝子の制御関係を多数見出した。そして二年目では、GTL1というトリヘリックス型の転写因子に着目した解析を行い、GTL1がRSL4という転写因子の発現を抑制することで根毛の成長を負に制御することを明らかとした (Shibata et al., 2018)。最終年度となる3年目では、初年度に行ったスクリーニングのさらなる検証を進め、根毛のリン酸飢餓応答に重要な役割を担う転写因子を同定したほか、様々な環境シグナルを統合する役割を担う転写因子を発見した。これらの転写因子はまさしく本研究で同定を目指す環境シグナルに応答し根毛の成長を制御する転写因子であり、本研究計画が期待通り進行したことを示している。さらに3年間の集大成として、自分自身の研究成果だけでなく根毛の成長制御に関わる転写因子および転写制御について網羅したレビューを書き上げて発表した(Shibata & Sugimoto, 2019)。
