Outline of Final Research Achievements |
There is an urgent need to establish a method to support the lives of elderly individuals with stroke and dementia. In this study, we clarified the characteristics of the associated neuropsychiatric symptoms during hospitalization and after discharge in elderly individuals with stroke and dementia, and examined the relationships among neuropsychiatric symptoms, activities of daily living (ADLs), and instrumental ADLs (IADLs). Although diverse psychiatric symptoms appeared during hospitalization, depression, anxiety, and sleep disturbances were the most frequent, negatively impacting the improvements in ADLs during hospitalization. Furthermore, depressive symptoms often persisted 6 months after discharge, which disturbed not only ADLs but also IADLs.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
