Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study analyzes Kazakh healing practices, which constitute a crossing of shamanistic tradition, Islam, and modern medicine, based on fieldwork in north-eastern Kazakhstan. The findings reveal that villagers practice pluralistic healing: using pastoral products and herbs, consulting with emshi (healer), visiting sacred places to pray, and going to hospitals. It is believed that some kinds of illness are the sign of healers’ talent, and that healers can control their own ailments only by healing the others’ illnesses. Both healers and ordinary people visit sacred places such as caves, springs and saint mausoleums, to pray for healing based on their worldviews. Their beliefs and practices are sometimes criticized as they are against Islamic dogma but socially function as ways to live with illness. The ongoing debate on healing indicates the sociocultural process which gives meaning to the experience of illness in Kazakhstan.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
