Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Studying the presumptive original design of Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn as a murder mystery surrounding the death of Huck’s father, my research has revealed that the author was obsessed with the theme of patricide, an obsession that originates the sense of guilt he felt at the death of his father, and that this original sin of the author was later to be replaced with a public forbidden fruit--slavery, the nation's original sin. This thus calls for a shift of focus in the criticism of the novel: from the presently dominant race issues associated with Jim, the runaway slave, to the patricidal theme related to Huck’s father; or, put another way, from the nation’s public, overt past crime against the slaves to the author’s private, secret crime against his father.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
