| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study explores the applied arts movement in Europe during the period of transition between the 19th and 20th centuries. We revealed the connections and the differences between the theories and practices proposed in Belgium, France, Austria and Germany by investigating the relationships among these countries. We also examined artists' and critics' arguments on modern "new arts" and their relationship with contemporary politics, industries and public opinion in each country: we confirmed that "new arts" styles emerged in conditions influenced by market competition with the cultural advantage of originality among the artists’ countries and social classes.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
アール・ヌーヴォーやユーゲントシュティールの先行研究が明らかにしてきたジャポニスムやケルトなどの影響源、思想的背景からの運動の理念的な解明に加えて、国家や地域、社会階層間の関係性に着目し、理論やメディアの言説傾向を読み直すことによって、応用芸術のスタイル傾向を決定づけていく社会的要因を明らかにする研究としての可能性を示した。また4カ国の地域的特性を掘り下げながら、その総体を俯瞰することにより、欧州大陸における応用芸術の動向をよりダイナミックに捉える視点が拓かれてきた。
