Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The present study audio-interviewed two female and two male participants who were, according to the previous large scale social survey, outlier English users in Japan; namely, high-school-graduate, non-urban-resident, non-white-collar, and non-high-income speakers of English in Japan. In two years, three long interviews were conducted with each of the four about their use of English in life and work, their history of education, future plan, as well as their views about English and English education. The narratives were fully transcribed and thematized. The analysis was guided by Foucault's theory of discourse (values and practices produced and reproduced by language, which binds those who speak of such values and practices). The participants' long narratives reflected the outlier English speakers' realities of proficiency NOT necessarily leading to success. In addition, multiple, often conflicting, discourses about English and related ideas were evident in the stories.
