Outline of Final Research Achievements

In the current study we constructed narrative corpus of Japanese-English school-age bilinguals, and analyzed the level as well as the directionality of cross-linguistic influence between the two languages in (1) topic maintenance (referent introduction, re-introduction and maintenance) and in (2) narrative structure of connecting events (use of connectives denoting causal relationship vs. temporality). Analysis (1) showed that the influence is most likely to occur at re-introduction which requires integration of various levels of information, and analysis (2) reports a bi-directional influence in how events are connected in the narratives, both of which contribute to the understanding of the unique characteristics of bilingual speech.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
